Grandparents Parenting Again and Kinship Care started in approximately 2010 as a spin-off of MOIST- Mothers of Inmates Support Team.  While facilitating that program, I saw many mothers taking care of their grandchildren due to their children’s incarceration.

After speaking with Shannon Perry, and Sharlonda Buckman, it was decided to start a support group for these ladies to help them with the resources needed to raise their grandchildren while their parents were away.    In 2010 The first Grandparent support group started at Central High School.  From Central, it spread to Cody, Ludington, and Drew Transitional, where we met for approximately four years.  In 2018, an evening class was started for those grandparents continuing to work. We meet at Fellowship Chapel on the 2nd Tuesday at 6:30 pm.

The South and West side of Detroit was chosen as an area to which we wanted to spread our group because we know there is a need for support due to the gap and disparity when sentencing black and brown men and women. Due to the generosity of the Brookdale Foundation, we were able to start there on March 3, 2020.
